Chapter Nine

“Dali, leave us,” Rin said as he marched into our quarters, his expression a mask of hard steel.

I pulled myself further up, leaning heavily against the headboard. I was still weak, too weak for my comfort, and all my duties had befallen Rin.

“What has occurred?” I asked with the same note of seriousness as Dali closed the door behind him.

“Telse brought news. There are forces gathering on the northern border of the Kari kingdom. Not even the Kari was aware of it—we asked.” He paced in front of the bed.

“Beyond the northern border is the kingdom of Riki. They do not favor us.”

“I am well aware of that!” Rin snapped at me and instantly looked contrite.

He dropped on the bed, bowed his head and whispered, “I am sorry, Merin. I do not know what to do. I am not a warrior, barely a ruler, even. Our kingdoms need you.”

I pushed the covers away and dragged myself to his side with effort. “You are doing well, Rin. You are competent and loved. Those are good beginnings to a peaceful reign.”

“But it is not enough. Kari is weak still. If Riki attacks, our race will be slaughtered. What should I do? Should I order your army to march and protect? I simply do not know.” He sounded defeated, and even with my hand against his back, he didn’t lift his head.

“If you send an army, Kari will see it as control and Riki as a provocation for attack. No. First, we need to understand what is happening and we have to build up our forces. If Telse doesn’t manage to provide us with more information, we will send a direct message to the Riki ruler.” Riki was a nation accustomed to war, much like Jede and Kari, only their conflicts had so far been contained within their borders. Spreading outward and turning their aggression on us could only mean they had run out of choices.

Rin stayed quiet for some time then he straightened, bobbing his head up and down. “Yes, yes, you are right, my king. That is the simplest and most effective solution.”

“I am getting better with each day. It won’t be long and I will join you on our throne and help with the decisions. As soon as my breath doesn’t decide to cease each time I try to speak.”

“Forgive me, my king, for tiring you so. I am simply too lost without you. I was never a ruler and avoiding war is vastly different than admonishing my suspicious subjects. And what’s worse, both Jede as well as Kari councilors see my ineptness.”

“Tell me what is happening. What have you found out today?” I asked him, pulling him closer to my chest.

Rin sighed tiredly, gripping the edge of his wrapping. “Telse said they have been restless for a while, but the conflicts were contained within their borders. He says there are two factions within one nation and they were always too busy killing each other in the past. But
